Cynthia Rowley Knit Dress : Step 20

So that one week break turned into 3 1/2 weeks - sorry - I just really needed to take some time for myself. My family took a last minute vacation out to Utah to see Rian and her new baby. It was the first time that either of us had met one another's new babies so it was extra special. I have never had any great urge to live near family. I have always been more of a wanderer and independant. This was the first time that I realized how wonderful it would be to live near my sister, and have our kids grow up together. Sigh.

OK, so lets finish this blasted dress. I must admit that if I didn't have you guys to answer to I probably would have put it aside never to return by now, but luckily you would know and so I am accountable. Thank you for that.

20 - Putting in the zipper. In order to make this a little easier ( I had many comments saying that it was impossible to put in the zipper with the pocket) I decided to have the bottom of the zipper end at the top of the pocket instead of halfway down. Really you only need it to get past the waistband anyways, so it should be fine.

To insert an inzisible zipper without an invisible zipper foot first lightly iron the zipper so that the teeth on the back side of the zipper roll flat. Make sure that you don't melt the plastic teeth or else your zipper will not close - I know this from experience.
Pin the zipper so that it is 5/8" in from the raw edge of your side seam. The top of the teeth should end 5/8" from the armhole. (where the zipper teeth are is where you seam will be).
Put on your regular zipper foot.

Stitch as close to the zipper teeth as possible. To help gently roll the teeth to the outside.
Stitch from the top to just above the pocket.

Repeat for the other side of the zipper.

Pin the skirt side starting where you stopped stitching the zipper. (right above the pocket) and all the way down to the bottom of the skirt portion.

Stitch at 5/8".

Turn dress inside out. Get rid of the excess bottom of the zipper by making a horizontal stitch just below where the zipper is attached to the dress. Backstitch.

Cut off the remaining zipper below stitch line.

Your dress should look something like this now.

Here is a great online tutorial for invisible zippers to help clarify.

  1. Glad to hear you had such a special visit with your sister and new little ones :) thanks for the pointers on this dress, too! I don't have time to get back to mine at the moment, but hopefully soon...
